R.A.F.T is considered a useful
writing strategy for students in Grades 4, 5 and 6. It is mainly used at the beginning
stage of writing (brainstorming/ prewriting) to guide young writers. R.A.F.T stands
for Role, Audience, Format and Topic. The video below explains this strategy better
along with examples.
These subsections play a crucial
role in a child’s writing as they act as a guide for them to know who they are
writing for, the purpose of the writing piece, the outline of the writing piece
and lastly the title or the focus of the overall piece. Below is a sample of
how the R.A.F.T Strategy may be used in Science classes at the Grade 5 level.

It is clear why Grades 4 to 6 are target for applying the RAFT strategy. Students should understand that they play a role as writers whether it is being story tellers or informers. They must consider their audience, are they looking to be entertained or can they benefit from the information? The format makes a difference which is the delivery of the content that suits its purpose such as letters or essays. The topic which is what the writing is based on is what drives the intension of the writer. Students should use the raft strategy as a standard of their writing which in turn will build passion as authors.

ReplyDeleteI like this strategy because it is like a building block for a writer. The RAFT strategy can be applied to any purpose of writing, it gives them a layout of a standard they have to uphold. Personally the Role they play carries the other aspects because they will all be considered when author recognizes that their writing affects others.
